The process of gasification through Pyrolysis should not be misunderstood as being incineration or burning, since it involves no combustion because there is no sufficient oxygen .

Obtaining gas via Pyrolysis of any biomass is a classic thermochemical process (existing for over a century).

Pyrolysis is the degradation of macromolecular materials highly heated in the absence of oxygen.

In practice it is not possible to get completely oxygen-free atmosphere, thus pyrolytic processes occur when the amount of oxygen present is below the stoichiometric combustion .

This effect is usually obtained from temperatures of 350°C (800°F) and the Equivalence Ratio (ER) between 0.2 and 0.6.

The ordinary Gasification (Indirect Combustion) can be considered the same and only differs from Pyrolysis by higher concentration of oxygen present in the reaction (ER above 0.6).
